The Flavian Amphitheatre was funded by the spoils of the Jewish War, a building paid for by a siege eight hundred miles away. Vespasian began it around AD 72; his son Titus opened it in AD 80. Its popular name came later, borrowed from a colossal bronze statue of Nero that once stood beside it.
